Port Harcourt Troops defending a crude oil pipeline in Okporowo community, Igbu Orlukwor clan, Ahoada East Local Government Area, Rivers State, have been fired upon by unidentified gunmen who are suspected of being cultists.
One of the soldiers suffered significant injuries in the incident that took place on Monday at approximately eleven in the morning.
Community reports claim that after the attack, the soldiers quickly retaliated with superior firepower, which forced the gunmen to flee.
However, after the incident, locals and indigenous people started to leave the region out of fear of retaliation from the military, who were searching the area for the criminals.
In response to the incident, Prince Ike Ehie, the king of Igbu Orlukwor, denounced the attack in a press release signed by Oyagiri Chime-Emele, Head, Information & Documentation, Eze Igbu Orlukwor Palace, calling it an insult and affront to established authorities.
The statement says: “Prince Ike Ehie, the Monarch of Igbu Orlukwor, has strongly denounced the reported killing of soldiers at Okporowo Community by some miscreants while they were on official business.
“He said that civilians shooting at military officers while they are performing their constitutionally mandated duties under any pretext is an insult and affront to constituted authorities.”
Ehie encouraged security agencies to respond with the highest professionalism and urged the government to find the culprits.
