The discovery of a newborn baby left in a carton close to a drainage in the Kaura region of Kano State shocked residents of Tudun Tagarji on Saturday.
Commander Rabiu Sulaiman, the head of the vigilante organization Operation Zaman Lafiya, revealed this information in a statement released on Sunday.
He claimed that, at around two a.m., his squad happened upon the unsettling image while on a routine patrol.
We discovered a startling occurrence within a pit near us yesterday morning at around two while we were on patrol. When we looked closely, we saw a discarded box, but we didn’t know what was inside.
Before taking the infant to the police station and telling them, we encouraged the ward head and other community members to come and see for themselves by morning,” he said.
They were led to a hospital by the police, where medical professionals verified the baby’s death.
“After returning home, we arranged the baby’s funeral in compliance with Islamic principles,” Sulaiman said.
However, the commander called on parents to help their children, especially young women, avoid situations that could result in unintended pregnancies and urged vigilante organizations to continue being watchful in protecting their areas.
“Unwanted pregnancy is against what Islam teaches. Parents need to keep an eye on their kids’ whereabouts and provide them with appropriate guidance,” he stated.
