In a traffic accident near the Otedola Bridge axis of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Wednesday, a suspected drunk driver died and three others were injured to varied degrees.
Adebayo Taofiq, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, said in a statement that the driver lost control of the car while driving at high speed, causing the collision.
Three passengers were injured in the collision, while the driver died at the scene of the collision.
“A terrible single vehicle collision involving a Toyota Sienna (KTU 666 JP) at Conoil, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been confirmed by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority,” Taofiq said. The driver died tragically in this incident that occurred earlier today, and three other passengers—two men and one woman—were seriously injured.
“The deceased driver lost control of the vehicle while driving at an excessive speed while under the influence of alcohol, according to preliminary inquiries.”
He added that Federal Road Safety Corps representatives transported the deceased’s body to a morgue in the state’s Yaba region, while LASTMA agents at the scene of the collision found a cell phone, cash, and sachets of alcoholic beverages. During the rescue efforts, 15 sachets of alcoholic gin, N48,200, and a phone were found inside the Sienna automobile by LASTMA personnel who acted quickly as first responders.
“To prevent any traffic disruptions, LASTMA agents quickly towed the accident vehicle to the agency’s yard, while the Federal Road Safety Corps officers, who were also on the scene, evacuated the deceased’s remains to a morgue in Yaba,” Taofiq continued.
In response to the event, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and advised drivers to abstain from drinking and driving.
“LASTMA General Manager Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed his sincere regret for the tragic event, offered the bereaved family his deepest condolences, and wished the injured victims a speedy and complete recovery.”
“He further issued a stern admonition to motorists, emphasizing that reckless and impaired driving remains a perilous menace to lives and property, and urging them to refrain from drinking and driving,” Taofiq said.
