Tems, a Nigerian Afrobeats artist, won the 67th Recording Academy Awards’ Best African Music Performance category, earning her second Grammy Award.
Chris Brown was the only non-Afrobeats nominee, and her popular song Love Me Jeje won in a category dominated by Afrobeats heavyweights.
Fellow Nigerian musicians Burna Boy, Asake, and Wizkid, who collaborated on MMS, as well as Yemi Alade and Davido, who joined Lojay on Chris Brown’s Sensational, were fierce rivals of Tems.
The singer said, “Wow, dear God,” during her acceptance speech. I sincerely appreciate you giving me this team and placing me on stage. This is my mother’s first Grammy, and tomorrow is her birthday. Ma has done so much for my brother and me, and I just wanted to say thank you. Mum, happy birthday. And my staff deserves my gratitude.
