As the Gunners try to regain some ground in the Premier League title race, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta may turn to the Saudi Pro League to help him with his striking problems at the Emirates Stadium. Former Liverpool player Roberto Firmino is reportedly being considered as a possible target due to his troubles in the Middle East with Al-Ahli.
Firmino left Liverpool after his contract expired after Jurgen Klopp left, and he joined Al-Ahli eighteen months ago. However, after finishing third in the league the previous season, Matthias Jaissle’s team has had a worse run this year, now sitting fifth in the league table, 14 points behind leaders Al-Ittihad.
He wants to return to Europe after being left out of their registered squad, and Arsenal might be the team to give him a path back to the Premier League.
After an erratic stint in Saudi Arabia, Firmino has reached the end of his time with Al-Ahli, according to a report from the Spanish publication Fichajes. He has decided to restart his career by returning to the Premier League. He may therefore decide to join Arsenal, who need new attackers as a result of the injury problem that has plagued their front line in recent weeks, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz both sidelined by injury.
After spending eight years on Merseyside, the former Liverpool player left Anfield in the summer of 2023. He finished his Reds career with 111 goals in 362 games, but even though he scored 18 goals in 59 games for the Jeddah-based team, Al-Ahli left him out of their Saudi Pro League squad, and he is eager to return to England.
Arsenal is the 32-year-old’s best choice as he considers ending his contract in the hopes of returning to the Premier League. Due to the injuries to Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, midfield alternatives had to be drafted wide, and Arteta was forced to improvise because Ethan Nwaneri in particular was playing out of place.
Although there are options in the MLS or a return to Brazil, Firmino’s success in England means that his goal is to return to the UK shores and continue where he left off at Liverpool. However, with his Saudi future looking bleak, the Gunners’ recruitment team has “opened the door” to bringing Firmino into their ranks.
There are several reasons why it would make sense for Firmino to join Arsenal. The innovative Brazilian, who was one of Brendan Rodgers’ final acquisitions before he was fired two months into Firmino’s stay on Merseyside, has now amassed 256 Premier League appearances under Klopp.
Firmino won three domestic cups with the Reds in addition to the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup, and he has more than 50 caps for Brazil.
Arteta, who is eager to add trophies to his trophy cabinet, may find Firmino’s expertise and availability upfront vital as Arsenal hasn’t won a major award in nearly five years.
Arsenal’s lack of honors under the Spaniard is the next step to his team’s success, despite their impressive recent results.
