A careless truck driver in Lagos maims a LASTMA officer

A careless truck driver lost control of the moving vehicle, crushing and maiming an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, or LASTMA, on Tuesday in the Ojodu Berger axis of Lagos State.

It was reported that the driver of the fully laden trailer, registered KTG 33 ZZ in Bauchi State, was traveling at an excessive speed when he abruptly lost control, resulting in a catastrophic collision at the axis.

The sad event, which highlighted the dangerous repercussions of reckless driving on public roadways, happened as the LASTMA officer was starting his afternoon duty shift.

However, preliminary investigations showed that the unfortunate trailer was traveling from Agidingbi via Oba Ogunji Road to Omole Junction in the Ogba corridor when the driver lost control of the truck while driving at an extremely high speed, crushing the officer.

The LASTMA officer suffered serious injuries from the crash’s sheer impact, which resulted in a catastrophic fracture of his right hand and leg.

For treatment, the sufferer was sent right away to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital or LASUTH.
In a blatant attempt to avoid punishment, the responsible trailer driver fled the scene.
However, security personnel from Ojodu Police Station, working with watchful LASTMA officials, quickly captured him.

In response to the terrible event, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, the General Manager of LASTMA, immediately paid a visit to the hospitalized officer at LASUTH.
“The extent of the injuries required an immediate amputation of his right leg,” Bakare-Oki said after an emergency medical evaluation at the Surgical Emergency Centre of LASUTH.

The head of LASTMA strongly denounced the event and bemoaned the fact that if the driver had been careful and followed basic traffic safety procedures, the tragedy would have been avoided.
He cautioned trailer and truck operators, along with other motorists, to uphold the utmost sense of safety consciousness, highlighting the inestimable value of human life.

He said, “LASTMA officers are not enemies of drivers; rather, they are committed to making sure that traffic moves smoothly, promoting urban efficiency and economic growth in Lagos State in the process.”
Bakare-Oki conveyed his deepest sympathies and wished the officer a speedy recovery.

He also reiterated LASTMA’s steadfast dedication to improving road safety and maintaining order on Lagos roadways.
He promised that the government would make sure the patients had all the care they needed to fully recover. “The Government is with you during this trying time; we won’t desert you.”
