THE EFEFCT OF Costus afer CRUDE EXTRACT ON SEMEN OF MALE ALBINO WISTAR RAT EXPOSED TO ARSENIC TRIOXIDE

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Costus afer extract on semen of male albino wistar rats exposed to arsenic trioxide. Twenty (20) albino wistar rats weighing between 80 – 160g were randomly assigned five (5) groups of four rats each. Group 1, 2 and 3 served as the treatment groups and were exposed to 30% of LD50 of arsenic trioxide 4 every four (4) days for 14 days. Thereafter, they were administered with 0.2ml,…

PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF Portulaca oleracea (PURSLANE)

PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF Portulaca oleracea (PURSLANE)

ABSTRACT The phytochemical screening of Portulaca oleracea leaf was carried out using standard analytical procedures. The result reveal that alkaloids and saponins were highly present, tannin, flavonoids and cardiac glycoside were tracely present. This may be the reason for the used of Portulaca oleracea leaf in herbal medicine. The result of the analysis is discussed.   TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE TITLE PAGE-       –         –         –         –         –         –         –         i CERTIFICATION-          –         –         –         –         –         –         ii DEDICATION-     –        …

PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTY OF THE LEAVES OF Tapinanthus bangwensis PLANT

PHYTOCHEMICAL PROPERTY OF THE LEAVES OF Tapinanthus bangwensis PLANT

ABSTRACT The quantitative phytochemical analysis of the leaves of Tapinanthus bangwensis plant was carried out using standard analytical procedures. The results revealed the presence of the bioactive components in varying concentrations as follows: Flavonoid (20.025 ± 0.035 mg/100g), tannins (5.153 ± 3.644 mg/100g), alkaloids (4.225 ± 0.035 mg/100g), phenols (2.116 ± 0.148 mg/100g). saponins (1.265 ± 0.0212 mg/100g), and terpenoids (0.971 ± 0.57 mg/100g). The presence of these compounds in appreciable quantities is an indication that the leaves of Tapinanthus…

EVALUATION OF NUTRACEUTICAL POTENTIALS OF “ATAMA” (Heinsia crinata) and “UCHAKORO” (Vitex doniana) LEAVES

EVALUATION OF NUTRACEUTICAL POTENTIALS OF “ATAMA” (Heinsia crinata) and “UCHAKORO” (Vitex doniana) LEAVES

ABSTRACT Extracts and powders produced from the leaves of two indigenous vegetables – ‘atama’ (Heinsia crinata) and ‘uchakoro’ (Vitex doniana) were evaluated. Four groups of processes were applied on the vegetables to obtain the samples: blanching, oven drying and milling; oven drying and milling; steam blanching, wet-milling, filtration, and fermentation; fermentation, wet-milling and filtration. After, a preliminary study to evaluate the antinutritional factors at different intervals of blanching and fermentation was carried out, five samples, fresh dried leaf powder (FDPL),…

ESTIMATION OF MICRO MINERAL CONTENT OF Citrullus lanatus PEEL (WATER MELON)

ESTIMATION OF MICRO MINERAL CONTENT OF Citrullus lanatus PEEL (WATER MELON)

ABSTRACT Estimation of macro mineral content of Citrullus lanatus peel was determine using standard analytical procedure. The concentration of the macro mineral were Phosphorus (P) (15.110  0.0012 mg/100g), Potassium (K) (36.770  0.043 mg/100g), Calcium (Ca) (55.213  0.451 mg/100g) and Sodium (Na) (70.860  0.511 mg/100g). From the result obtained from the study it shows that Citrullus lanatus peel is a rich source of essential macro minerals. Therefore the peels should be consumed regularly to meet the requirement of macro minerals of…
